Join us for a free public reading of “A Real Boy” by Stephen Kaplan on Wednesday, March 16th at 7:30pm. This satiric play tells the story of two marionette puppets with a human child. When the young boy starts growing strings, his kindergarten teacher takes it upon herself to save him. This play explores life for those on the fringe of society and the tensions that arise when others try to fix their “problems.” This workshop is the latest addition to State of Play’s Playground Workshop series and will be directed by Audrey Alford, from our co-producing partner Ivy Theatre Company.
The play was a semi-finalist for PlayPenn, Dayton Playhouse's FutureFest, the Ashland New Play Festival and MTWorks' Newborn Festival and was originally workshopped with John Patrick Shanley and actors from Ensemble Studio Theatre at the Stonybrook Southampton Playwriting Conference and had a reading at the Dramatists Guild with Brad Oscar, Maulik Pancholy and Polly Lee as well as one with StrangeDog Theatre in Montclair, New Jersey. It received a full workshop production this past summer at This Is Water Theatre in College Station, Texas.
We are excited to announce our cast for this reading; Katie Braden, Kim Gainer*, Derek Rudley, Kristen Vaughan, Levi Wilson*, and State of Play’s Michelle Concha and Adam La Faci.
Seating is limited, but free tickets can be reserved by emailing: RSVP@stateofplayproductions.com
